"How Running Turned My Anxiety into a Journey of Self-Discovery"
Ghalya J. Al Harami, Public Relations Specialist at QF’s Hamad Bin Khalifa University – and an ASICS FrontRunner speaks to Qatar Living on how running transformed her life.
My story began in 2016, during my college years when I struggled with severe anxiety. Returning to school after 10 years of working, and living alone in a foreign country played a significant role in this struggle. It was then that I consulted a therapist, and she encouraged me to engage in physical activities as a form of therapy.
Life brings its share of challenges, and one of the biggest I faced was returning to Qatar, where sports—especially running—were often seen as activities for men. The perception that women didn’t belong in such spaces made it difficult for me to follow my passion. I had to overcome not only physical barriers but also societal ones, where judgment and stereotypes weighed heavily.
Running became my way of overcoming these challenges. With every run, I pushed back against those limiting beliefs, proving to myself – and others – that I belonged on the track as much as anyone else. Running not only improved my mental health but also made me more resilient in facing life's challenges. It allows me to blow off steam, reflect, and regain energy, draining the negativity accumulated through the day and restoring my sanity.
When I run, I feel lighter, as if I’m flying.
But more than just a physical activity, running became my sanctuary and my therapy when anxiety struck. It became my way of carving out precious time for myself, helping me reconnect with my inner peace. Each run is a transformative journey, providing me with both a healthier body and a clearer mind. Through the rhythm of my footsteps and the fresh air, I find solace and strength, reinforcing my commitment to overall well-being and mental clarity. Running is not just a workout; it's an escape. And since embarking on this journey, I’ve truly discovered the real me.
I owe it all to my two biggest supporters: my sister, Shaikha, who has always been there for me in every aspect of life, and my running coach, Abdullah Alkaabi, founder of A13 Academy.
Abdullah has profoundly influenced my journey in countless ways. From the very beginning, he has provided invaluable guidance and unwavering support, including my most recent achievement—completing the 90km Qatar East to West Ultramarathon solo in 2023. With me through every high and every low, he has provided me with the knowledge and encouragement I need to persevere and succeed.
To all the girls out there—invest in running, not just for your physical fitness, but for your mind and soul. Running builds strength, resilience, and confidence. It offers you time for self-care, reflection, and stress relief. Every step brings you closer to discovering your full potential. So, push your limits, embrace the journey, and remember that running is more than a sport; it's a path to empowerment and well-being. You are stronger than you think—take that step, and just keep moving forward.
