Interesting numbers emerge from Qatar Monthly Statistics bulletin for May
Qatar, having a constantly evolving population and rapidly expanding economy, always have interesting tales of growth to say.
The new edition of the Qatar Monthly Statistics bulletin, prepared and released by the country’s Planning and Statistics Authority, threw up some interesting numbers in areas spanning from inbound visitors to issuance of building permits.
While the number of travellers (285,000) saw a monthly decrease of 12.1% from April, it was still a massive 71.7% increase compared to the same period from 2022.
While the highest number of visitors came from the GCC region (37%), 66% of all travellers used the air route to enter Qatar.
Coming to Qatar’s population, 2381 live births were registered in May. There was a 2.4% increase in the total number of Qatari births compared to April. Meanwhile, 211 deaths were recorded, an increase of 9.9% from April.
While May saw a 41.8% hike in the number of marriages (329 marriages in all), a massive 148.4% increase was seen in the issuance of divorce certificates (159 cases total) compared to the previous month.
If the number of new vehicles sold is an indicator of a country’s prosperity, then Qatar’s growth trajectory is intact. The country saw 8,214 new vehicles being registered in May, a monthly increase of 20.5% and an annual hike of 25.7%.
Compared to April, 75.6% more driver’s licenses were issued in May. The number of traffic violations saw a 12.6% increase while traffic accident fatalities rose by 53.8%. But thankfully, traffic accident cases (704) saw a 9.6% monthly and 14.4% annual decrease.
Light injuries accounted for most of May’s traffic accidents (92%), followed by severe injuries at 5%. A total of 20 deaths were recorded, equivalent to only 3% of total traffic accident cases.
Qatar distributed QAR80 million (a monthly increase of 2.8%) to 1,443 individuals (0.5% higher) as social security statements in May.
In the banking sector, Total Broad Money Supply recorded QAR699bn during May 2023, an annual increase of 6.5%. Meanwhile, cash equivalents, including Commercial Bank Deposits, was QAR955bn during May 2023 (a decrease of 1.3%, from QAR967bn).
A total of 758 new building permits were issued, translating to a 97.9% monthly and 17.5% annual increase.
