Israel set to ban Al Jazeera Channel following approval from Attorney General
Israel, which is carrying out a bloody bombing campaign against Palestine in the Gaza Strip, is preparing to ban the Qatari news channel Al Jazeera from reporting in the country after it received approval for the same from its attorney general.
Israeli media reported that Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara and Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi reached an agreement on Tuesday on the wording of emergency regulations to stop the Qatari media outlet from operating.
Shlomo Karhi had on Sunday said he was seeking closure of Al Jazeera’s local bureau, accusing the Qatari channel of pro-Hamas incitement and exposing Israeli soldiers to potential attack from Gaza.
The proposal, which had been vetted by Israeli security officials, had been sent to legal experts.
The Israeli government has repeatedly criticised Al Jazeera’s coverage of the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. They are one of the few global media channels that has a physical presence in Gaza and Israel.
With Israel barring anyone from leaving or entering Gaza, it is up to the media already on the ground to cover the ongoing bombing campaign.
Al Jazeera hasn’t had the best of relations with the Israeli government after Israeli soldiers shot and killed veteran journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in May 2022.
