Limited Gaza evacuations via Rafah Crossing begin after Qatar-brokered deal

The Rafah border crossing, between Gaza and Egypt, has opened and is admitting people to go through for the first time since the Israel-Hamas war began on October 7.
More than 500 foreign nationals and dual citizens are set to be allowed to leave the enclave, the Gaza Borders and Crossings Authority (GBCA) said in a statement. However, no timeline is currently available as to how long it will remain open.

The limited opening of the border came about after Qatar mediated an agreement between Egypt, Israel and Hamas, in coordination with US authorities, sources briefed on the deal said.
The list of people allowed to cross the border was published by the GBCA which called on them to head towards the crossing on Wednesday, at 7am local time, reported Al Jazeera.
Egypt has prepared a field hospital in Sheikh Zuwayed in the Sinai and has sent 10 ambulances to Rafah in anticipation of the crossing.
The deal is independent of the other issues that are still under negotiation, including hostages held by Hamas, reported Reuters.
Hamas has told mediators it will soon release some of the foreign captives it seized during their attack.
Israel sent its ground forces into Gaza following weeks of air bombardments in retaliation for a major attack by Hamas on October 7.
