Local Dates Festival achieves 240 tones of date sales
The 9th local fresh dates festival, held from July 23 to August 3, 2024, successfully sold over 240 tonnes of fresh dates, marking a 10% increase compared to the previous year. The 12-day event attracted over 50,000 visitors, including tourists, and was organized by the Ministry of Municipality's Agricultural Affairs Department in coordination with Souq Waqif management.
The total fresh dates sold during the festival amounted to 240,172 kilograms. The Khalas variety led the sales with 105,333 kilograms, followed by Khunaizi with 45,637 kilograms. Shishi and Barhi dates sold 42,752 kilograms and 27,260 kilograms, respectively while other varieties reached 19,190 kilograms.
Yousef Khalid Al Khulaifi, Director of the Agricultural Affairs Department, noted the festival's success attributing it to the state's strong support for local production and the development of the agricultural sector. This year's festival coincided with the date harvesting season, aiming to support farm owners and palm cultivation enthusiasts.
The festival featured 110 local farms offering various types of dates. Prominent varieties including Khalas, Shishi, Khunaizi, Barhi, Iraqi, Sukkari, Zaghloul, Sultana, Al Ghar, Nabat Saif, Lulu, Razizi and Shihab. Additionally, three farms sold local fruits, including 510 kilograms of figs and 395 kilograms of almonds.
