Lusail Stadium scores five-star sustainability rating

The incredible Lusail Stadium is proud to receive a five star-rating under GSAS. Being the largest by capacity, this FIFA World Cup 2022 venue delivers a lasting legacy with its beautiful infrastructure and unique design.
Sustainable building practices were used throughout the construction of Lusail Stadium. With its graceful architecture and vibrant patterns, the venue will surely be providing a memorable experience to fans coming from across the planet.
The magnanimous Lusail Stadium received a five-star rating under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS), which is managed by the Gulf Organization for Research & Development (GORD). The venue is also set to stage final of the iconic FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 on December 18, 2022.
The laudable rating was achieved for GSAS Design & Build and a Class A* rating for GSAS Construction Management. Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy’s executives were granted the certificates during a ceremony on Monday. The SC delegation included Eng. Ghanim Al Kuwari, Deputy Director General, Technical Services, Eng. Bodour Al Meer, Sustainability Executive Director, and Jassim Al Jaidah, Sustainability Communications Manager.
“This recognition from GORD is an important part of our FIFA World Cup journey,” said Deputy Director General, Technical Services Eng. Ghanim Al Kuwari. “Sustainability has been central to our plans from the start as we are determined to develop venues that boost local communities here in Qatar long after the tournament. We are very proud to receive these awards and pay tribute to everyone involved in the construction of Lusail Stadium – an incredible venue that will host the biggest international football match on the planet – the FIFA World Cup final – later this year.”
The spectacular stadium holds a capacity of 80,000 along with various sustainability features including an advanced level roof and water efficiency systems. It’s designed to embody a legacy of art with its magnetic interplay of light and shadow inspired by the Fanar lantern which is reminiscent of skillful craftsmanship encompassing the Islamic and Arab regions. Boosting as the largest venue of this tournament, its shape and facade represent decorative motifs on bowls, vessels, and other art pieces influenced by the upspring of civilization in the land. The stadium’s roof is constructed from a special sustainability material called PTFE. This said material shields the arena from warm wind, keeps out dust, and permits sufficient light needed for the pitch’s thriving while providing shade to lessen the weight on the stadium’s air conditioning.

“Achieving these top ratings is testament to the hard work of the project team, which prioritised sustainability features from the design phase all the way through to construction and operation,” said Sustainability Executive Director Eng. Bodour Al Meer. “In addition to the roof, the project site has conserved 40% more water than conventional stadium developments thanks to efficient fixtures and leak detection systems.”
With a few months to go for FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the matches will be played in eight magnificent stadiums taking place from 20 November to 18 December. It is interesting to notice that each venue has earned a minimum of four-star rating under GSAS adopted by a sustainability rating system by FIFA. It mainly guarantees that all infrastructure related to the upcoming football tournament fulfills stringent environmental guidelines.
Sustainability Communications Manager Jassim Al Jaidah added, “We thank all our contractors and stakeholders for helping us to achieve this valuable award, which is yet another proud moment in our FIFA World Cup sustainability journey.”
With an aim to inspire global sporting associations, the stadium is intended to be remodeled after the conclusion of FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 into a multi-purpose community hub allowing potential sports players and the general public to have an inevitably secure space. Seats removed from the venue would be donated across the globe to nations that are far behind in sporting infrastructure.
Founding Chairman of GORD Dr. Yousef Alhorr stated, “By meeting the exacting GSAS standards, Lusail Stadium has set a new precedent in environmental excellence, guided by the SC’s sustainability strategy. We congratulate the SC for advancing climate action by successfully translating green building principles into impactful practices. This is testament to the strong commitment to sustainability – which has been apparent from before ground was broken at Lusail and other venues.”
A total of ten exciting matches would be played in Lusail Stadium starting with Argentina versus Saudi Arabia on 22 November and concluding with the final on 18 December 2022 at Qatar National Day.
