Matthew Perry, Chandler Bing from Friends, dies at 54
Matthew Perry, known for playing Chandler Bing in the hit American TV sitcom Friends, was found dead on Saturday at his Los Angeles home, according to reports.
The 54-year-old star was found in a hot tub and died in an apparent drowning. An official cause of death is yet to be announced. As per law enforcement sources, authorities responded at 4 pm to his home, where he was discovered unresponsive. No foul play is suspected at this time.
Warner Bros Television Group, which produced all 10 seasons of Friends, said in a statement “We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry. Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family. The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many. This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans.”
Born in Massachusetts in 1969, Matthew Perry rose to fame with his portrayal of Chandler Bing in the beloved TV series Friends. This iconic show, featuring an ensemble cast including Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, and David Schwimmer, became a cultural phenomenon, earning numerous Emmys and record-breaking ratings. Its 2004 finale remains one of the most-watched TV episodes of the 2000s.
Throughout his career, Perry dabbled in both television and film, appearing in movies like Fools Rush In, Three to Tango, and The Whole Nine Yards. His post-Friends television career included roles in shows like Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and guest appearances on The Good Wife and The Good Fight.
Perry also took on the lead in various sitcoms, including Go On and a remake of The Odd Couple, which enjoyed a three-season run. In 2016, he ventured into playwriting and starred in The End of Longing, a play that debuted in the West End and later transferred to Broadway. However, Perry faced personal struggles and battled addiction, which he recounted in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
Perry wrote in Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: “At this point in my life, the words of gratitude pour out of me because I should be dead, and yet somehow I am not.”
