Messi’s 2022 FIFA World Cup shirts expected to fetch at least $10m at auction

British auction house Sotheby’s is set to auction six shirts worn by Argentinian superstar Lionel Messi during his side’s winning run at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
Valued at over $10m, it is widely expected to become the most valuable collection of sports memorabilia ever sold.
The New York office of the world-famous auction house will put six of the first-half shirts Messi wore in Qatar, including the one he played in during the dramatic final win against France.
Argentina had defeated France in a penalty shoot-out at the Lusail Stadium, after being tied 3-3 at the end of full time. Messi scored twice in that game.
The shirts will be on free public display at Sotheby’s New York headquarters between the bidding dates of November 30 and December 14. It will work with US-based tech startup AC Momento, which partners with high-profile athletes to help manage their match-worn memorabilia.
The current record for game-worn memorabilia is Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Finals jersey, which sold for $10.1m in New York in September 2022.
The current record for a game-worn item of football memorabilia is Diego Maradona’s shirt during Argentina’s infamous 1986 quarterfinal 2-1 win over England, where he infamously scored the ‘Hand of God’ goal. It sold for $9.3m at Sotheby’s London office in May 2022.
A portion of the proceeds from the auction of Messi’s shirts will be donated to UNICAS Project, led by Sant Joan de Deu (SJD) Barcelona Children’s Hospital with the support of the Leo Messi Foundation, to meet the needs of children suffering from rare diseases.
