MME aims to enhance quality of dates produced in Qatar
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) has shifted its focus on the quality of local dates to improve its market value, as production at the required level has been achieved.
According to Yousuf Khalid Al Khulaif, Director of the Agricultural Affairs Department at MME, local date farms are expected to supply better quality dates in large quantity this year due to the supply of Polycarbonate Drying Houses (PHDs) by the Ministry.
He stated that the Ministry has begun working with its partners to organize a huge dates festival in October this year as part of its plan to give local date producers numerous marketing opportunities.
He explained that the Ministry had supports date farms with PHDS to reduce wastage of local dates, in addition to improving their marketing quality.
The Ministry has distributed a substantial number of PDHs to date farms as part of its commitment to distribute 100 PDHs this year.
The PDH is a drying chamber with an exhaust fan and a polycarbonate sheet covering it. The novel method increases the quality of dates, especially in humid places, while also protecting the fruit from insects, birds, dust, and rain. It also speeds up the drying process and eliminates waste.
“The self-sufficiency rate of Qatar in date production reached to 86 percent which is expected to grow further in coming years,” said Al Khulaifi.
Al Khulaifi noted that the Ministry is conducting a feasibility assessment in collaboration with the business sector to supply substantial quantities of dates to the local market as part of a larger goal to attain fruit and vegetable self-sufficiency by 2023.
The Ministry of Municipality and Environment, represented by the Agricultural Affairs Department, has been hosting festivals for dried and fresh dates to create a marketing platform for local date farmers.
Furthermore, the Ministry is planning a large event in October this year to offer completely ripe and dried dates.
