
Morocco earthquake: death toll rises, more than 1,200 injured

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Morocco late on Friday at 11 pm local time (22.00 GMT), causing devastating damage across the country’s many regions. The quake hit 72 km southwest of Morocco’s tourist destination, Marrakesh, causing great tremors and leaving residents and tourists scrambling for safety at midnight.
Several areas have faced the wrath of this natural disaster with casualties recorded in the regions of Marrakesh, Casablanca, Agadir, Azilal, Chichaoua, Ouazarzate, and Youssouffia provinces, with the epicenter of the quake hitting Ighil. Buildings collapsed and a lot of material damage resulted in casualties and deaths.
Rescue work is underway, and the death toll has been over 1,000, and 1,200+ injured so far. As the number of injured people rises, medical facilities have begun to call on blood reserves and real-time blood donations to provide first aid. Authorities and international human aid organizations have been relentlessly at work trying to gauge the casualty rate and assist in providing disaster management on the ground.
Many countries have immediately pledged their support and monetary aid to assist with urgent aid and relief in Morocco’s areas. Qatar Red Crescent Society has already donated QAR 1 million in urgent aid to help provide mattresses, medical supplies, food, shelter, tents, and more to the victims of this devastating tragedy.
