Mutaz Barshim takes high jump bronze at Budapest World Championships
Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim missed the winning title but managed to take bronze medal with a 2.33M jump at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, on Tuesday.
Italian Gianmarco Tamberi, who shared the 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold with Mutaz, won the title with a 2.36M jump on countback. While Tamberi cleared the height on his first attempt, USA’s JuVaughn Harrison did so on his second and took silver.
The 32-year-old Qatari skipped the opening height of 2.20M at the National Athletics Centre and hit the bar on his first attempt of 2.25M. He then cleared that height on his second try and then sailed over 2.29M and 2.33M easily on his first attempts.
He failed three attempts at 2.36M and had to be content with a third-place finish.
The bronze is Budapest was Mutaz’s fifth World Championship medal. Previously, he won three gold medals — in 2017 London, 2019 Doha and 2022 Eugene — and a silver in 2013 Moscow.
Mutaz, considered one of the greatest high jumpers of all time, had been gunning for an unprecedented fourth World title in the Hungarian capital. However, the evening clearly did not belong to him.
