‘No justification for acts of war in healthcare facilities’

After Gaza's largest medical complex, Al-Shifa Hospital was attacked by Israeli forces, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths commented that there could be no justification for acts of war in or around any healthcare facilities.

Griffiths tweeted that “there can be no justification for acts of war in healthcare facilities leaving them with no power, food or water and shooting at patients and civilians trying to flee.”

He further added that this kind of behavior is “unconscionable, reprehensible and must stop. He stressed that “Hospitals much be places of greater safety and those who need them must trust that they are places of shelter and not of war.”

From the start of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip on October 7, a tragic toll has been exacted: 198 health workers and 36 civil defense personnel have lost their lives, while over 130 have sustained injuries. The conflict also led to severe damage, leaving approximately 60 ambulances unusable, with 53 completely out of commission. Furthermore, 51 ambulance staff members were unable to work. The impact on health services is significant, with 51 out of 72 health centers either damaged by bombings or incapacitated due to fuel shortages.

On Saturday, Doctors Without Borders reported that Gaza's hospitals endured relentless bombardment within the past 24 hours, with patients and medical staff trapped inside. Urgent calls were made to cease attacks on these vital medical facilities. The ongoing aggressive actions by Israel in Gaza have tragically resulted in over 11,000 casualties, including 4,506 children and 3,027 women. The toll stands at more than 27,000 injured, with the majority being children and women.
