Over 2,000 Qatari citizens take up private sector jobs in 2023
Qatar’s Ministry of Labour (MoL) has been working on a Job Nationalisation Programme for some time and its efforts showed huge returns this year.
As part of the efforts, 2092 Qatari citizens and children of Qatari mothers were appointed in private sector companies in 2023, said a top official.
“The MoL seeks the participation of national workforces in the private sector through qualification and skill development programmes of national cadres,” said Mohammed Al Khulaifi, who heads MoL’s Training and Skills Development Department.
Speaking to Qatar TV, he said the Ministry was continuing its coordination and communication with private sector companies to provide jobs for Qataris and children of Qatari women.
The private sector recruited 534 Qatari citizens — 302 males and 232 females — in the third quarter of 2023. This was a 150% jump compared to hiring in the second quarter.
The growing number of citizens in the private sector is due to the joint efforts of the MoL and the Civil Service and Government Development Bureau (CSGDB), he said. The two entities have been working to provide quality job opportunities to citizens and prepare a suitable work environment for them.
The MoL, in a bid to enhance the job nationalisation programme in the private sector, issued a law that was approved by the State Cabinet last week and referred to the Shura Council.
Mohammed Al Yafei, MoL’s Director of Legal Affairs Department, said the draft law granted them the authority to provide incentives, facilities, and privileges — including sending citizens abroad to complete their university studies — in coordination with relevant authorities for filling positions in the private sector.
He said the appointments were restricted to Qatari men and women in leading and specialised roles in the private sector, in addition to qualifying and training the national workforce to assume leadership positions in the private sector.
The proposed law aligns with the Qatar National Vision 2030, focusing on human development by providing quality investments and generating employment and training opportunities for all citizens.
Al Khulaifi said the Ministry made tangible progress in 2023. The ‘Istamer’ platform was launched to employ Qatari retirees wishing to work in the private sector to benefit from their experiences.
“One of the main points the Ministry worked on was developing its electronic services. We provide 50 services to the public. The MoL is hoping to make its services entirely paperless and we’ll soon provide 80 online services,” he said.
