Planning and Statistics Authority launches improved version of Qatar Open Data Portal
The Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) on Saturday launched the second edition of the Qatar Open Data Portal, a national platform for open data and information built in accordance with international standards.
Qatar’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) prepared the portal’s first edition in 2019.
The responsibility to operate and manage the portal was transferred to the PSA earlier this year.
The PSA team is currently working on building an open data platform that will include many topics and statistics related to the country. A national partnership has been set up with relevant ministries and government agencies, who will provide data necessary for the public’s use.
PSA President Dr Saleh bin Mohammed Al Nabit praised his team’s efforts during recent times.
“All stakeholders in MCIT and PSA teams worked hard for its success. The United Nations Statistical Commission, at its 54th session held in March 2023, stressed that open data provides a basis for ensuring access to data for all, for use and reuse.
“It’s more than mere technical definitions that determine how data is produced and disseminated. Rather, it intersects across a value chain of socio-economic and environmental data that are transparent and made available periodically in the portal for the public to benefit from and to increase knowledge,” he added.
Information Systems Department Director Dr Khalid Ali Al Quradaghi, who is also Advisor to the Office of PSA President, said the success of the Qatar Open Data Portal would depend on the extent of commitment by partners to provide the portal with information on an ongoing basis.
The Portal will consist of a host of topics such as population, price indices, trade, environment, energy, economy and others.
As a start, PSA has started posting the ‘Qatar Monthly Statistics’ bulletin which contains data from 2018 until 2023. PSA will continue to periodically update the site with more data, graphs, and others
The portal currently contains detailed data, including data from the past five years, classified by several topics related to national development.
