Al Wakrah Stadium all set for grand opening this Thursday

Al Wakrah Stadium all set for grand opening this Thursday

By QLNews

One of Qatar’s first stadiums built entirely from scratch is just a few days away from the final curtain reveal.

The inauguration ceremony of Al Wakrah Stadium, which is in its final phase of completion, is set to take place on Thursday, May 16.

The grand opening will unroll ahead of the Amir Cup final that will see the title clash between Al Sadd and Al Duhail.

The final of the tournament will be graced by HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani accompanied by a number of Ministers and their Excellencies.

Al Wakrah Stadium is the second tournament-ready venue, which was designed by legendary architect Zaha Hadid.

The stadium embodies a futuristic and bold design with a capacity of 40,000. It is said to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals and is a reflection of the country’s innovative and ambitious spirit.

Earlier in March, Al Wakrah Stadium’s turf was laid in a world record time of just 9 hours and 15 minutes.

It is the second World Cup stadium to be completed after Khalifa International Stadium in May 2017.

Al Wakrah Stadium Project Manager at Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), Thani al-Zarraa, commented that achieving a world record was not the actual aim - mainly it was a trial to see what would happen in the event of an emergency during the World Cup and how to deal with it in light of hosting the matches during a busy schedule in addition to knowing the feasibility of changing the pitch in a short period.

The design of Al Wakrah Stadium is inspired by a dhow boat inverted for maintenance and will be a qualitative addition to Al Wakrah, offering a host of facilities around the stadium that are expected to be operational before and after the World Cup.

The facilities include cycling and running tracks, a multipurpose indoor arena, mosque, wedding hall and market.

Visitors and fans during the World Cup will be able to spend their time in the stadium facilities before and after matches.

Al-Zaraa said one of the most important objectives of Al Wakrah Stadium is to use it for social activities on a daily basis and not just for sports purposes.

He said the total area of the project is estimated at about 600,000sq m, of which 150,000sq m is dedicated to the stadium, and 90,000sq m of green landscapes and nearly 700 trees.

The rest is divided between the various facilities such as cycling and horse racing tracks, Kahramaa power station and other services.

The stadium mirrors the historical and cultural heritage of the region and the most important city in Qatar.

This wakra stadium was designed by legendary architect Zaha Hadid. She died in 2016 due to heart attack. This iraqi lady

was the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize. Her company completed 950 Projects in 44 countries and employs 400 high profile staff across 55 nations.

But reality is she left all this behind , all the staff, all the legacy , the Pritzker Architecture Prize and all her wealth and traveled alone to face the reality of life. Our life is a continuous exam until we meet our creator and it is when God will decide if we passed the exam or failed miserably.
