Qatar is all set to host the 140th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly, which gathers more than 2,200 delegates from 160 countries around the world.

Said to witness the largest participation of delegates in the history of its meetings outside the main headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the meeting will be attended by 80 heads of different world parliaments, reported Gulf Times.

The strong participation in this event reflects the confidence of the world’s parliament leaders in what they describe as the ‘smart diplomacy of Qatar,’ under the wise leadership of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, said HE the Speaker of the Advisory Council Ahmed bin Abdulla bin Zaid Al Mahmoud on Tuesday.

HE Al Mahmoud confirmed yesterday that the Council has taken every stride in the way of making this event a massive success, in order to achieve results that would support the IPU on its path to strengthening democracy and sustainable development, reported Qatar Tribune.

HE the Speaker welcomed president of IPU Gabriela Cuevas Barron and members of the union's Executive Committee, who met in Doha yesterday to prepare for the Assembly and meetings that kick off tomorrow, April 6.

Expressing his full support towards making IPU’s event in Doha a success, HE Al Mahmoud noted that he wishes to make this a milestone in the organization’s history, according to The Peninsula.

The participants of the event will have a great chance to learn about Qatar's heritage and the generosity of its people, and also acquaint themselves with the renaissance witnessed by Qatar in all fields thanks to the wise policies of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, HE the Speaker mentioned further.

The general debate will be centered on 'Parliaments as Platforms for Enhancing Education for Peace, Security and the Rule of Law,’ HE Al Mahmoud said adding that the topic was chosen in coordination between the Advisory Council and the IPU and its secretariat.

The event will include both closed and open meetings with various groups, categorized according to regions such as the Latin American Group, Asian Group, Arab Group, African and European Group, among other interrelated groups.

The 140th IPU Assembly and Related Meetings will be held at Sheraton Doha and will conclude on April 10.
