Education City stadium gets 5-star rating for sustainability
Qatar's preparations for the 2022 FIFA World Cup are now in full swing as the country gears up to host the most popular football tournament in the world.
The focus is not just on completing the facilities in time, but also on 'delivering amazing' on its road to 2022.
Last year, Qatar reached a new high by finishing the turf-laying of two of the 2022 FIFA World Cup stadiums, Al Wakrah Stadium and Al Bayt Stadium, in record time.
And now, the country has achieved another remarkable success as the Education City Stadium, one of the eight 2022 FIFA World Cup stadiums, received a 5-star rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS).
The prestigious award is considered "a mark of excellence in sustainability, design, and construction," FIFA said.
The Education City Stadium, dubbed 'Diamond in the Desert,' embraces several sustainability features such as direct access to public transport via the Education City tram system link to Doha Metro and low toxicity indoor materials that provide a healthy indoor environment.
Additionally, the LED sports lighting at the stadium will contribute to better lighting with lower energy consumption.
Another fascinating component of the stadium construction is that 85 percent of building materials are locally sourced, while 29 percent come from recycling.
The stadium also boasts carbon dioxide sensors for high occupant density spaces, which will assure proper ventilation and high indoor air quality. This is in addition to "a water-efficient irrigation design to minimize landscape water consumption," FIFA said.
It's a gamechanger. Qatar's Education City Stadium?️ has exceeded #FIFA's #sustainability requirements ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

The five-star rating certification was presented to Executive Director of the Technical Delivery Office at the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) Jassim Telefat by the Founding Chairman of the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD), Dr Yousef Al Horr.
GORD presented three certificates to the SC for Education City Stadium. These comprise GSAS Design & Build (five stars), GSAS Construction Management Class A* and GSAS Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.
"This prestigious award is a clear indicator that we are delivering on our commitment to sustainability and green building; it is a proud moment for everyone that has worked on this very special project," the SC's Sustainability & Environment Senior Manager Engineer Bodour al-Meer commented on the occasion.
The GORD Founding Chairman said, "The SC's unyielding stance on sustainability has been clear since the very beginning. With each new project, the SC continues setting higher goals to achieve a carbon-neutral World Cup."
"By exceeding FIFA's required standards, Education City Stadium has raised the bar not only for Qatar's upcoming stadiums but also for future tournaments around the world," Al Horr added.
