HH The Amir to meet the Malaysian PM today, relations expected to reach new highs

By QLReporter

HH The Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who is currently on a working trip to Malaysia, will meet with Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamed today.

Once the two leaders meet, the relation between the two countries is expected to reach an all-time high, reported Gulf Times.

Yesterday evening, upon arrival at the Kuala Lumpur Airport, HH The Amir was welcomed by Malaysia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Saifuddin Abdullah, Qatar’s ambassador to Malaysia Fahad Mohamed Kafood and members of the Qatari Embassy.

The visit is the first official meeting between HH The Amir and Dr Mahatir since the latter took office in May this year.

Malaysia’s Ambassador to Qatar Dato Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said the state visit would further boost ties between the two nations. He added that there was likely to be more economic cooperation between Malaysia and Qatar.

“Total trade between Malaysia and Qatar has increased two-fold in 10 years, from $320m in 2007 to $670m in 2017. I believe the current warm and close bilateral relations will provide an excellent and strong foundation for a more active and meaningful economic cooperation,” he was quoted as saying by The Peninsula.

The Ambassador was happy with the opportunities given to Malaysian companies to help build Qatar up.

“Doha-based Malaysian companies like Gamuda, WCT Engineering, Muhibbah Engineering, Eversendai, Malaysia Airport Consultancy Services and Holiday Villa Hotel look forward to participating in more development projects in Qatar,” he said.

“Under the new administration, Malaysia would like to continue encouraging Qatari businesses to invest in Malaysia, particularly in new growth areas in both the manufacturing and services sectors,” he added.

It was announced that on Friday, HH The Amir will honour winners of the Sheikh Tamim Anti-Corruption International Excellence Award, during a ceremony in Putrajaya.

The award is being constituted in co-operation with the United Nations.
