HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with the President Donald Trump of the United States on the sidelines of the 72nd Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City following the opening ceremony.

During the meeting, he emphasised the strength of the Qatar’s relationship with the US, especially after Trump’s apparent past sympathies to the Saudi stance when the illegal blockade of Qatar was imposed. (He called Qatar a “funder of terrorism”.)

HH the Emir heavily criticised the countries participating in the siege of Qatar, pointing out how they meant to pressure Qataris via "foodstuffs, medicine and ripping off consanguineous relations to force them change their political affiliation to destabilise a sovereign country.”

"Isn't this one of the definitions of terrorism?" HH the Emir asked.

During the meeting, the two leaders discussed bilateral relations and ways of developing ties between the two countries in various fields.

“As you said, Mr President, we have a problem with our neighbours and your interference will help a lot and I’m sure we can find a solution for this problem,” HH the Emir stated

Trump’s take on the situation was that he had a “very strong feeling” the dispute would be solved “pretty quickly”.

“We are right now in a situation where we’re trying to solve a problem in the Middle East and I think we’ll get it solved,” he said, and described the Emir as a long-time friend.
