Indian Embassy in Qatar warns people against calls by fraudsters

By QLCrime

The Indian Embassy in Qatar has warned expatriates from that country to not respond to phone calls from people claiming to be from the embassy.

In recent times, fraudsters have been getting in touch with Indian nationals and asking them for their passport number, bank account number and other personal details, reported Gulf Times.

The Indian Embassy has also requested people to report such calls as soon as they receive them.

“Beware of spoof call masquerading as Embassy Officials. Do not disclose any personal details such as your Passport number, bank account number, etc. Kindly report to us at 44255777 or email us at cons.doha@mea.gov.in if you receive such a call,” it tweeted from its official Twitter account.

One of the ways spam callers mask their identities is by ‘spoofing’ local numbers. If a number looks familiar, you’re probably more likely to pick up the call, reported Qatar Tribune.

“We've come to know that people were getting calls asking to pay money or face problem with their passports,” an embassy official was quoted as saying by The Peninsula.

“This is a global phenomenon and we've received several complaints from expatriates,” he added.
