International Dates Exhibition begins at Souq Waqif

By QLNews

If you’re looking to stock up on a variety of high-quality dates in preparation of the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, head out to the International Dates Exhibition 2019 that opened in Souq Waqif yesterday.

Featuring as many as 150 local and international exhibitors specialized in the production of dates, the exhibition offers visitors and tourists an opportunity to not only purchase some of the best dates in the world but also learn about the local varieties of dates and delve into a deeper understanding of how palm trees are cared for and conserved.

The exhibition is organized by the Agriculture and Fishery Affairs Department at the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) with the ambition to shine a spotlight on Qatar’s cultural heritage. It therefore also showcases dates produced at local farms and other parties in the country.

Inaugurated by His Excellency the Assistant Undersecretary for Agriculture and Fisheries Affairs, MME, Sheikh Dr Faleh bin Nasser Al Thani, yesterday, the exhibition introduces different kinds of dates while enhancing the cultural and heritage awareness associated with the palm tree and the importance of its fruits in terms of food and culture.

Khalid Al Khulaifi, the director of MME’s Agricultural Affairs Department noted in a press statement that the exhibition comes days before the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan to provide this significant product to citizens and residents of Qatar.

This year’s festival comprises products from many countries such as Kuwait, Oman, Jordan, Africa, China, and Iran.

Prices of products at the exhibition are suitable for all, Al Khulaifi mentioned, adding that the organizing committee had paid particular attention to keeping prices low, in addition to providing free display areas.

The senior official further highlighted that Qatar has achieved 86 percent self-sufficiency in dates, and that the Ministry organizes regular exhibitions to market local dates, in addition to supporting the owners of farms through the date purchase project.

At least 80 local farms, which are selling products worth QR10mn, for the ministry, under this project, are to be donated by Qatar to needy countries, dispatched by relevant authorities such as Qatar Red Crescent Society and Qatar Charity.

The dates exhibition has gathered 89 local and 59 foreign companies from 10 different countries. The exhibition will run until May 4.
