‘Lift the Blockade’ website launched to combat fake news
“Lift the Blockade” is a website launched by Qatar’s government to combat “fake news” as the Gulf Crisis extends.
The site’s homepage is topped with a ‘clock’ that records the time from days (106 so far) down to minutes since the blockade began.
Lift the Blockade is meant to show Qatar’s perspective during the blockade, detailing its impact on citizens and residents, and links to recent international news articles that paint an unbiased picture of Qatar.
The Government Communications Office (GCO), in a statement to Doha News, emphasised the site’s purpose being education.
“We thought it was important that all stakeholders knew the facts about our efforts to defeat terrorism, the origin of the blockade, and the human impact of the blockade,” said Media Attaché Jassim Al Thani.
He pointed out that Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt have “attacked Qatar in the news with lies.”
Lift the Blockade contains a section about Qatar’s stance regarding the blockade and its resolution, and Qatar’s belief in dialogue and discussion in resolving differences (and not brute strength or bullying).
It also documents how the siege of Qatar by its neighbors has separated families, interrupted medical care and education, and violated human rights.
