On Thursday, the Philippine government lifted a suspension on overseas Filipino laborers travelling to Qatar for work.

The temporary deployment ban, imposed by the Department of Labour and Employment (DOLE) on June 6, had been partially lifted a day later.

Labour secretary Silvestre Bello III said the decision to fully lift the moratorium was made after consultations with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the endorsement of the Philippine Overseas Labour Office (POLO), according to Gulf Times.

“This decision was arrived at the advice of Foreign Affairs Secretary Allan Peter Cayetano and upon the recommendation of Qatar POLO following their assessment of the situation in the gulf state,” Bello said in a statement, according to CNN Philippines.

Bello said the Qatari government had guaranteed the safety of the approximately 240,000 Filipinos working in the state, reported The Peninsula.

The Philippine’s labor attache, David Dicang, was also quoted as saying that the situation in Qatar had normalised.

“Labor Attaché David Des Dicang and the Philippine Embassy even requested the deployment of newly-hired workers to Qatar, particularly to the Philippine School Doha and Philippine International School-Qatar,” the statement added.

The resumption of deployment was needed so Philippine schools in Qatar could continue their operations, Dicang said in the statement.
