The Ajyal Film Festival, organised by the Doha Film Institute at the Katara Cultural Village from November 28 to December 3 this year, will be bringing back another popular event — Geekdom 2018.

The gathering, which is considered as the country’s largest pop-culture event, is a must-visit place for nerds, gamers and everyone who loves to have a good time with friends, reported The Peninsula.

Geekdom, which is a part of the Ajyal Creativity Hub that aims to engage the community, is free to enter for all and will be held at the Geekdom Pavilion in Katara Buildings 18 & 19.

Cool cosplay days, edge-of-the-seat video game tournaments and film screenings are some of the specialities people can look forward to enjoying.

In addition, Qatar’s character designers, concept artists, storyboard artists and fan artists will be demonstrating their skills and sharing them with the community. Their artwork will also be up for sale at the event.

The Geekdom Tournaments, at the gaming area, are something not to be missed. Fans will be able to compete in EA Sports’ FIFA ’19 Tournament here. You can also register your six-member team for an episode of Overwatch gameplay.

There will also be other video-game tournaments like Super Smash Bros, Tekken 7, Street Fighter V and Dragon Ball FighterZ.

The Geekdom will showcase films by eminent Japanese animator and director Hayao Miyazaki.

The films to be screened include Kiki’s Delivery Service, Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro.

Author, actor, director and voice artist Omar Al Shamma will take you through his life and works at the Geekdom Talks.

While Dr. Gregory Bergida, former Director of Student Affairs at Northwestern University in Qatar will talk on ‘Immersive Content: Expanding Outward by Looking Inward, Professor Leland Hill will speak on the topic ‘Life as a Geek.’

On the closing night on December 3, ‘Cinemoon meets Geekdom’ will be held at the Katara Esplanade from 9 to 10 PM. It will be organised by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra.
