Qatar officially takes delivery of the first of 36 French-built Rafale fighter jets

Qatar has been spending a lot in recent years to beef up its security at the borders. One of the significant investments it made in past years was with the order of 36 French-made Rafael fighter jets.

And now, the country has officially taken delivery of the first of 36 Rafael jets it ordered from French manufacturer Dassault, reported Al Jazeera.

The handover ceremony took place yesterday in Merignac, in southwestern France, where the planes are built. It was attended by Qatar’s Defence Minister HE Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah and Dassault Aviation chief Eric Trappier.

France’s Secretary of State to the Minister of the Armed Forces Genevieve Darrieussecq was also present at the handover ceremony.

Speaking on occasion, Dr Al Attiyah highlighted the historical relationship between the two friendly countries. He also named the new Qatari Rafale squadron as ‘Al Adyiyat,’ based on a Surah in the Holy Qur’an, according to Gulf Times

Qatar had signed an agreement with France in 2015 to buy 24 Rafale fighter jets for the Amiri Air Force and later added 12 more aircraft to the order.

The ceremony was attended by Qatar’s Ambassador to France HE Sheikh Ali bin Jassim Al Thani, Commander of Amiri Air Force Major-General (Pilot) HE Mubarak bin Mohammed Al Kumait Al Khayareen, Qatari Military Attache in France Brigadier-General Engineer Mohammed Mubarak Al Shahwani and several senior officers of the Qatari Armed Forces, reported Qatar Tribune.

The twin-engine plane has been in service with the French Air Force since 2004. France has also sold Mirage F1, Alpha Jets and Mirage 2000 fighters to Qatar before.

After failing to sell the Rafale abroad for several years, France finally won a contract from Egypt in 2015 for 24 jets, followed by the sale to Qatar. In September 2016, India also agreed to buy 36 of the fighters.
