Siege nations are putting the GCC at risk, says Qatar’s foreign minister

Four nations — Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE — started an illegal blockade of Qatar on June 5 and the crisis is still continuing.

While a lot of mediation efforts have been going on at different quarters, there have not been much lessening of the tensions.

Qatar’s foreign minister HE Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said his country did not believe in internationalising the Gulf crisis. He said he believed the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) could resolve the crisis through dialogue, reported The Peninsula.

He said that the ongoing tensions would put the GCC at risk, especially as the siege countries were the ones who violated the Riyadh Agreement.

He stressed that the blockading countries had put the GCC at risk by attacking a member state, pointing out that there is consensus within the GCC on a general policy and on that each member state is sovereign.

“There’s a consensus within the GCC that each member state is sovereign. The blockading countries are the ones that violated the Riyadh Agreement,” Sheikh Mohammed said.

Sheikh Mohammed said Western countries did not respond to the accusations against Qatar that it supports terrorism and the blockading countries failed to provide any evidence to support their accusations that Qatar interferes in their internal affairs, according to Qatar Tribune.

He called on the Saudi Arabia-led bloc to focus on resolving other crises, instead of creating a new crisis with Qatar.
