Signs of a breakthrough seen as Qatar, Saudi Arabia decide to attend GCC summit
In what many people see as a breakthrough in the almost six-month-long Gulf crisis, Qatar is set to take part in the GCC Summit in Kuwait next week, alongside Saudi Arabia.
Al Jazeera reported that Saudi Arabia will participate in the GCC summit, citing diplomatic sources. The website reported the diplomatic sources as saying that Saudi officials have no objections to attending a GCC summit in Kuwait.
Meanwhile, the Middle East Monitor reported that officials from Saudi Arabia, Oman and Qatar had arrived in Kuwait City ahead of the Gulf summit on December 5 and 6.
It cited diplomatic sources as saying that there were signs of a breakthrough after Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Hamad Al Sabah recently visited Riyadh and met with Saudi King Salman Bin Abdulaziz, who assured him that the Kingdom was happy for the summit to go ahead.
Earlier, HH The Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani had received a written message from the Emir of Kuwait H Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, containing an invitation for him to participate in the 38th session of the Supreme Council of the Cooperation Council for the Arab Gulf States (GCC), reported The Peninsula.
It is still unclear which other nations will take part in the meeting. Bahrain had earlier threatened to boycott any summit Qatar was part of.
Once the GCC meeting start, it will be the first time leaders from Qatar and the blockading nations come face to face ever since the crisis broke on June 5.
Since its founding in 1981, the council has not cancelled any annual summit because of inter-communal differences.
It is an amazing and encouraging news. Hopefully, there will be normalcy in the relations between the countries.
Very good news indeed. I hope and pray the countries in the region begin to have the same brotherly relations as before.
