UN General Assembly selects Qatar to facilitate high-level meeting

By QLNews

Qatar's prowess in facilitating high-level international meetings has been proven many times.

As a peaceful, friendly and highly resilient nation, Qatar has not only garnered praise from the world over but also secured the faith of the international community in its abilities.

Earlier this week, Qatar's candidate Her Excellency Dr Sheikha Abdulla Al-Misnad was elected as a member of the United Nations (UN) Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD).

Yesterday, UN General Assembly (UNGA) announced its decision to give Her Excellency the Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani and HE the Permanent Representative of New Zealand Ambassador Craig John Hawke the authority to lead and facilitate consultations with member states to hold a high-level meeting marking the 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women

The 25th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, which adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPFA), will coincide with the 75th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2020.

The preparations for the high-level meeting have already started. In this regard, two consultation sessions were held on June 13 and June 25, accordingly.

HE President of the UN General Assembly for the 73rd session Maria Fernanda Espinosa underlined the details of the high-level meeting in a letter addressed to all UN member states.

Concluding the letter, the UNGA president thanked HE Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani for accepting the task and expressed confidence to receive full cooperation and support from member states.
