Qatar has offered immense support to the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism highlighted the Under-Secretary of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, Vladimir Ivanovich Voronkov, yesterday.

Voronkov spoke highly of Qatar’s efforts to combat violent extremism by closely and actively cooperating with the UN Counter-Terrorism Office.

Referring to the role played by sport in this regard, the UN official said that Qatar’s hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup and its efforts in the sports field will facilitate the counter-terrorism activities further and prevent violent intolerance, according to Gulf Times.

The remarks were made at a meeting of the Committee on Peace and International Security to discuss a draft resolution on the unacceptability of the use of mercenaries as a tool for undermining peace and violation of human rights.

The meeting was part of the 140th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union currently underway in Qatar.

Voronkov stressed the importance of co-operation with parliamentarians to implement the documents emanating from the United Nations and the Security Council in relation to countering terrorism while underlining the need for parliaments to come together and enact national legislation to make counter-terrorism efforts more successful and effective, reported The Peninsula.

He further shed light on the duties of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, pointing out that the Office aims to establish close relations with Security Council bodies, member states, and to strengthen existing and developing new partnerships through regular travel and attendance at counter-terrorism meetings.

The UN official revealed that the United Nations will host the first world conference on victims of terrorism in June this year, while noting that it is important to listen to them to achieve success and focus on prevention as a key step in the fight against terrorism.

Member of the Advisory Council, Mohamed bin Ali Al Hanzab, underscored Qatar’s important and pivotal role in combating terrorism and supporting regional and international peace and stability.

In recent years, Qatar has witnessed several important initiatives including adoption of laws, signing of agreements and establishment of task forces to combat terrorism, reported Qatar Tribune.

He mentioned that the country also recognized the need to prevent terrorism by protecting young people from falling prey to any such activity. This includes Silatech’s recent initiative to provide jobs for Arab youth and teach millions of children.
