United States hail measures taken by Qatar in the war against terrorism

By QLNews

Qatar has always been at the forefront in its war against terrorism and terror financing.

In July 2017, Qatar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani and former US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson had signed a landmark agreement — the Counterterrorism Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Just a few days back, the US State Department praised Qatar’s efforts in combating terrorism and its financing over the past year.

“Qatar significantly increased counterterrorism cooperation with the US in 2017. Qatar is an important and active partner in this regard with the United Nations and the regional and international organisation,” the State Department said in its annual report on Terrorism 2017 published on its website.

With the MoU, Qatar and the US had agreed to increase information sharing to disrupt terrorism financing flows and intensify counterterrorism activities.

On November 8, 2017, the two nations had met again to evaluate the progress made in implementing the MoU.

The report by the US State Department said Qatar was an active participant in the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, was active in all Defeat-ISIS Coalition working groups, and had provided significant support in facilitating US military operations in the region, reported Qatar Tribune.

The counterterrorism MoU led to a significant increase in information sharing, including on identities of known and suspected terrorists. Aviation security information sharing also increased, as new protocols were agreed to and established.

On countering the financing of terrorism, the report said Qatar joined the US and other member countries in the Terrorist Financing Targeting Center (TFTC) in October, 2017.

Qatar welcome State Department Report

Meanwhile, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs HE Lolwah Al Khater welcomed the US State Department’s appreciation for Qatar’s contributions to the global fight against terrorism.

“The State of Qatar welcomes the findings mentioned in the US report, which highlights the significant cooperation between Qatar and the USA in the fields of combating terrorism and disrupting terrorism financing flows,” she was quoted as saying by Gulf Times.

“I would also like to emphasise Qatar’s holistic approach which aims at treating the socio-economic and political roots of violent extremism by spreading hope, awareness and through promoting more inclusive policies,” she added.
