US approves arms deal worth $1.1bn to Qatar despite ongoing crisis

Despite the ongoing illegal siege of Qatar, the country has always stood with its head held high. Always sticking to its guns, it has refused to be bullied by neighbouring countries.

The American Government, which is trying hard to put an end to the GCC crisis, has approved a $1.1bn deal to service Qatar’s F-15 fighter planes at home, reported Reuters.

The move is impressive especially as the GCC crisis, currently in the end of its fourth month, does not show any signs of abating.

Although US President Donald Trump initially seemed to side with the blockading nations, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been trying hard to put an end to the ongoing crisis.

The State Department’s contract will see them servicing Qatar’s F-15QA jets and building them ground facilities and hardened bunkers, according to the Economic Times.

“Qatar is an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Persian Gulf region,” the department said, in a note from its Defense Security Cooperation Agency.

“Our mutual defense interests anchor our relationship and the Qatar Emiri Air Force plays a predominant role in Qatar’s defense.”

The new maintenance and training facilities will also come with improved ‘cyber security services, mission critical computer resources, support services, force protection services.’

According to Defense World, Qatar’s government had requested support of its F-15QA multi-role fighter aircraft program to include construction services, new parking/loading ramps, hot cargo pads, taxiways, hangars, back shops, alert facilities, weapons storage areas, hardened shelters, squadron operations, maintenance, training, information technology support and cyber facilities among others.

The proposed sale will improve Qatar’s capability to operate and sustain its F-15QA aircraft.

The prime contractor for construction, cybersecurity, and force protection infrastructure will be determined through competition.

A few months earlier, Qatar had inked a mammoth $12bn deal with the USA to buy F15 fighter jet planes.
