US President Donald Trump calls Saudi king, asks blockading states to end crisis

American President Donald Trump spoke with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud on Wednesday and urged ‘all the parties in the Qatar dispute’ to find a diplomatic resolution to end a crisis that has embroiled several Gulf countries, Reuters reported the White House as saying in a statement.
“President Donald J Trump spoke today with King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia. The President and the King praised the resilience of the communities affected by Hurricane Harvey, and King Salman offered his condolences to the families who have lost loved ones,” the statement on White House’s official website read.
“President Trump and King Salman also discussed the need to defeat terrorism, cut off terrorist funding, and combat extremist ideology. The President urged that all parties to the Qatar dispute find a diplomatic resolution that follows through on their commitments made at the Riyadh Summit, to maintain unity while fighting terrorism. The two leaders also addressed the threat Iran poses to the region,” it said.
The illegal blockade of Qatar, which began on June 5, is the worst the region has seen in a long time. Immediately after the start of the blockade, Trump seemed to take credit for precipitating the crisis in a series of tweets.
However, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has since tried to end the crisis by visiting the region several times. He has also appointed two senior officials to help resolve the Gulf crisis.
