World’s largest water reservoirs in Qatar near completion
Qatar’s General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is building what could become the largest water reservoirs in the world. These are now 70 percent complete, according to Qatar Tribune, and will transport through water pipelines that spanning a distance of up to 660km.
Each reservoir will have a capacity of some 100 million gallons of water each, with the goal being to provide Qatar’s population with a seven-day strategic reserve of freshwater. The current emergency supply will only last the nation two days, so it is clear how important the project is in light of a catastrophe (which will hopefully not come to pass).
These pipelines are reportedly being imported from Japan and France, and facilities are now in the testing stage.
The project is being implemented in view of the population growth and urban development witnessed in Qatar, Head of Water Projects Section at Kahramaa Eng. Jabr Rashed al Nuaimi has stated.
The project is meant to boost Qatar’s emergency water supply in view of these factors.
The construction of this $4.7 billion Water Security Mega Reservoirs Project started in 2015, with the first phases set to be complete next year.
The reservoirs are situated in Um Baraka, Um Salal, Rawdat Rashid, Abu Nakhla, and Al Thumama, and after their completion, Kahramaa aims to build 16 more reservoirs and additional pipelines at these five sites to achieve an “ultimate total storage capacity of about 3,800 million gallons of water,” according to its website.
