In a powerful note, Sheikha Hind calls out ‘modern colonialism masked in democratic idealism’

Israel has been pounding Palestine with bombs, shutting borders and killing thousands of people, since the last few weeks.

The beleaguered nation has received support and solidarity from different corners of the world.

HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson and CEO of Qatar Foundation, added her voice of support to the Palestinians through a strong and heartfelt note on her Instagram handle.

“My dear friends, I ask you to open your eyes to the truth. This isn’t a war between two ethnic groups, or religions. This is a fight against colonialism,” she wrote.

“They may paint our brothers and sisters as barbaric, tent-loving bedouins. But their history is just as long as yours. They’ve existed.

“Their grandfathers were cobblers, merchants and doctors. Their grandmothers were teachers, weavers and gardeners. They have dreams of college, work and raising families. They have dreams to travel the world and discover different cultures.

“Their forefathers did, but now, they’re imprisoned. They’re made to feel less than human. Their tragedies barely make the footnotes. Their traumas are never dealt with,” Sheikha Hind wrote.

She called out the oppressors for trying to ethnically cleanse the Palestinian land.

“As people demonstrate around the world for peace, the same governments that advocate for ‘the only democracy in the Middle East’ try to stop them. They’re told to find residence in neighbouring countries — a bold attempt to ethnically cleanse the land they, and their forefathers, were born in.

“And who are those making these calls? The very same countries who still cannot create safety for their own citizens. Those same countries that use democracy in their rhetoric, but turn a blind eye on international law being broken time and time again when it comes to the oppressed,” she wrote.

“This is nothing less than modern colonialism masked in democratic idealism. They will call them terrorists, we call them freedom fighters. Which side of history will you be on?” she asked, while ending her note.
