Preserving Qatar’s culture, through the eyes of Her Majesty

The Qatar University (QU) Library, in a bid to showcase Qatar’s cultural and historical heritage as well as offer a unique overview of the country’s vibrant past, future and present, recently launched a new project titled “Qatar through the Eyes of Her Majesty.”
The QU Library is collecting historical documents from different sources, including newspapers, and organizing them diligently to make them accessible to beneficiaries while respecting intellectual copyrights. It will together comprise 27 volumes.

“The project enriches the library’s holdings and facilitates researchers’ access to historical information through the library’s index,” said QU Library’s Head of User Services Fatima Al Naemi.
Asmaa Nasir, Assistant Information Services Specialist, spoke about some of the sources used in the compilation process.
“The project is based on important articles found in newspaper volumes and other old sources. In our compilation, one can find a letter written by Saleh Suliman Al Mana, Secretary of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani’s office, addressed to Abd al-Masih Antaki — the editor-in-chief of Egyptian newspaper Al-Imran — in 1909,” she said.
“We’ve an article from Egyptian magazine “Al Musaawar” by famous Kuwaiti historian Saif Marzooq Al Shamlan, as well as articles by Lebanese historian Ameen Rihani and an article about Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani. These documents, along with others, are significant historical records related to Qatar’s social, economic, cultural, and industrial conditions,” added the top official.
QU Library’s Assistant Acquisition Specialist Aljaohara Al Hajri spoke about some of the contents of the project.
“The project highlights Qatar’s development through the Eyes of Her Majesty, particularly in the Egyptian Press, during an important period in Qatar’s modern history, spanning from the 1950s to the early 1980s. The project also includes a collection of articles and investigative journalism pieces that cover Qatar’s educational, healthcare, urban, and sports advancements, as well as the initiation of modern projects following the discovery of oil, which has led to ongoing economic development,” said Aljaohara.
“The project is really important for researchers as it assists them in accessing information that forms a wealth of knowledge, continuously growing and inspiring generations to come,” said Assistant Information Services Specialist Iglal Abdullah.
