Prime Minister emphasizes urgent need to halt Gaza war for regional stability
Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs H E Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani emphasizes the imperative to cease the Gaza war, stating that resolving this central issue is crucial to preventing further escalation in the region. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, he expressed concern about the escalating tensions in the Red Sea and emphasized that the repercussions extend beyond the region to impact global trade.
Addressing the Palestinian issue as a pivotal concern, the Prime Minister warned against the expanding conflict's spillover effect, citing its progression from southern Lebanon to Syria, Iraq and now the Red Sea. He highlighted the potential global consequences, particularly affecting international trade. The Prime Minister stressed the coordination of events in the Middle East, emphasizing the global impact, including implications for LNG and merchant shipments.
Cautioning against merely treating symptoms without addressing the core issue, Sheikh Mohammed emphasized the temporary nature of such solutions. He advocated for a diplomatic approach over military intervention, expressing concern that retaliatory actions by the US and UK, while attempting to preserve international trade, could elevate the risk of further escalation.
The Prime Minister dismissed military resolutions as ineffective, stating that continuous attacks and retaliations would only extend the conflict. He painted a grim picture of the devastation in Gaza, with over 23,000 casualties, mostly women and children, and extensive destruction requiring the rebuilding of an entire city.
Expressing disappointment with the international community's response to the war, Prime Minister highlighted the controversial nature of calls for a ceasefire. He emphasized the need for GCC countries to engage in dialogue with Iran, seeking common ground to address differences and build mutual understanding.
