Qatar-Bahrain Causeway project revived after high-level meeting in Manama
Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani met with his Bahraini counterpart and Crown Prince HRH Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa at the Al Qudaibiya Palace on Friday.
The leaders discussed ways to strengthen and develop cooperation between the two nations.
The meeting discussed the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway project. Concerned authorities in both countries were directed to complete the plans and begin implementing the project.
The Qatar-Bahrain causeway was first proposed in September 2001, with Danish consultancy COWI roped in for the project's first phase. However, despite multiple attempts, the project was stalled indefinitely.
The link between the two countries is expected to be around 40km long. It is expected to support both a road and a railway line.
Early plans suggested the project would comprise 22km of bridges and viaducts, 18km of embankments and two 400M cable-stayed bridges.
The project, also known as the Friendship Bridge, would cut journey time between the two countries from five hours to just 30 minutes.
According to early plans, the eastern end of the causeway in Qatar would be located at Ras Ashairij, about 5km to the south of Zubarah. The other end of the causeway would link to the North of Askar in Bahrain.
With the current talks between the two countries’ leaders, the chances of a revival of the ambitious bridge project seem closer than ever.
The two sides also discussed a number of issues of joint interest, and the latest regional and international developments, including developments in the Gaza Strip.
The two sides stressed the need to immediately stop the war in Gaza and protect civilians.
