Thousands of Qatari nationals and expatriates came together to celebrate the National Sports Day (NSD) 2023 all over the country on Tuesday. With a total of 130 activities being hosted by 100 entities, there was something for everyone to do.

Qatar Foundation (QF) Chairperson HH Sheikha Moza bint Nasser kicked off the year’s NSD activities by leading a walkathon called ‘Walk For a Cause,’ at Qatar Foundation, in aid of Turkey and Syria.

Sheikha Moza was joined by Vice Chairperson and QF CEO HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani and Qatar Olympic Committee President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani. The walkathon was held in collaboration with Qatar Charity to raise funds for those affected by the recent earthquake.

HH The Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani joined participants for a walk in the Souq Waqif area. A number of top officials accompanies him.

QF hosted a fun triathlon — Try-a-Tri — this year, to create awareness about the sport and encourage more participation in it. Hundreds of enthusiastic participants took part in it.

The Education City Stadium hosted sports activities for women and girls, including the semifinals and finals of the Women and Girls Football Tournament. The stadium also saw teams compete in a functional fitness challenge, using equipment like rowing machines and medicine balls.

Meanwhile, Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Interior HE Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani took part in a number of the NSD activities, held under the slogan ‘The Choice is Yours.’

He interacted with the children of Shafallah Center for Persons with Disabilities, Al Noor Center for the Blind, and Orphanage Care Center - Dreama.

Qatar’s Minister of Education and Higher Education HE Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi said sport plays a vital role in developing students’ characteristics and skills, such as perseverance, flexibility, and discipline. The Ministry also organised several sports activities in the Old Doha Port Park.

Dr. Ibrahim bin Saleh Al Nuaimi, Undersecretary of Qatar’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education, stressed the NSD’s importance in the life of society.

The General Retirement and Social Insurance Authority (GRSIA), in cooperation with the United Development Company, participated in the 2023 NSD sporting events at the Pearl district. GRSIA staff and their families, as well as residents and visitors to Pearl Island, took part in it.

The Katara Cultural Village Foundation also organised various activities along the waterfront and Katara Beach. The programmes were well attended, with staff and family members of several ministries, government and private agencies and institutions, and the public taking part.

Among the most prominent entities that participated in these events were the Qatar Football Association, Qatar Shell, Qatar Rugby and Hockey Committee, Hamad Medical Corporation, the Ministry of Sports and Youth’s Al Reyada Girls Center, Doha Bank and Qatar Insurance Company.

The Qatar Women’s Sport Committee, headed by Lolwa Al Marri, also organised several activities and events for NSD 2023. A large number of women and children, members and players of national teams and their families took part in it. There were competitions in football, volleyball, gymnastics, volleyball and athletics, among others.

Shift group of companies, Lesha Bank and Mondrian Doha organised a joint event for staff and family members at the Doha Sports Park in Lusail. The venue was marked with several fitness zones that offered a wide range of activities for adults and kids.

One of the most exciting events of the day was a volleyball competition, which was intensely fought. Lesha Bank emerged as overall winners.

Meanwhile, around 700 participants of all ages got to get up, close and personal with the Qatar national football team’s new Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz at the Academy’s indoor dome. The experienced tactician, who recently led Iran at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, interacted with the participants and gave them tips for the game.

A free outdoor yoga session, organised by the Sheraton Doha Hotel at West Bay, also proved to be a huge draw. Hundreds of enthusiasts flocked to the area for the session.
