Qatar has been doing a lot in recent times to project itself as an attractive global business destination.

The efforts seem to be bearing fruit as the ‘US News 2023 Best Countries’ ranked Qatar as the overall 26th best nation in the world, based on different parameters.

Qatar was recognised for its excellent business and investment atmosphere.

“In the most recent Best Countries rankings, Qatar ranked in the top 15 countries for being entrepreneurial and innovative, and for having a well-developed digital infrastructure and providing easy access to capital,” US News Data Editor Julia Haines told local media.

“Countries that perform well in this category typically have a reputation for being innovative, educated, and well connected to the rest of the world, while also supporting entrepreneurs with a strong legal framework, well-developed digital infrastructure, and transparent business practices,” she said.

In the ‘Movers’ sub ranking, Qatar took the second spot after UAE, which climbed one place from the previous year.

Qatar also jumped significantly in the ‘Cultural Influencers’ sub-ranking, climbing nine spots to reach 21. The official said it showed that Qatar was perceived as a prestigious and happy nation.

Apart from the 2023 Best Countries general rankings list, US News also compiles several other top lists, including ‘Best Countries to Invest In’ and ‘Best Countries to Start A Business In.’

This year, Qatar finished 11th in the ‘Best Countries to Invest In’ list.

“Qatar is among the list of best business decision-makers, which is strongly associated with attributes such as economic stability, favourable tax environments, being entrepreneurial, and having a skilled labour force,” said Haines.

On the other hand, Qatar was ranked 72nd in the list of ‘Best Countries to Start a Business In.’ This ranking reflected Qatar’s performance in five attributes —affordability, bureaucracy, cheap manufacturing costs, connectivity to the rest of the world and easy access to capital.

Among GCC nations, Qatar is ranked second, behind UAE (19th), in the US 2023 Best Countries ranking list. Saudi Arabia (31st), Bahrain (58th) and Oman (65th) came next.

The criteria for inclusion in the US Best Countries rankings depends on a combination of data from the UN and the World Bank.
