Qatar court convicts 16 people for bribery and money laundering
Qatar’s Public Prosecution announced the court had sentenced 16 people, including four employees of the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), to heavy fines and jail terms for several crimes.
On May 7, 2023, the Attorney General’s Office referred the 16 defendants to the competent criminal court for bribery, exploitation, harming public funds, violating the freedom and integrity of state-related tenders, and money laundering.
The competent court punished a Qatari official, who worked with HMC, to 15 years in prison. He was also handed a fine of QAR729m.
The second defendant, a Jordanian, faces a 11-year imprisonment and QAR171m fine. The third defendant, a Palestinian, got a 10-year jail sentence and QAR144m fine. The fourth HMC employee, an Indian, was sentenced to 14 years in prison and a QAR313m fine.
Ten other defendants, including two Qataris and owners of companies contracting with HMC, were also punished.
While the first one got a five-year jail term with QAR228m fine, the second was handed an eight-year sentence and QAR25m fine.
Eight other defendants — six Indians and two Jordanians — who worked for those companies, were served with different lengths of jail time.
The fines imposed on them also varied from QAR5m to QAR195m.
The court also ordered the deportation of the non-Qataris after completing their sentences.
The court also acquitted two defendants, one of whom was a Qatari and the other a Jordanian.
