Qatar Donates $20m to the Lebanese Army
The Lebanese army has received an additional $20 million from Qatar, enhancing support for Lebanese troops, according to Lebanon's state agency NNA.
This timely assistance comes as tensions escalate between the Israeli military and Hezbollah trading fire across Lebanon's southern border. Though the Lebanese army is not involved in the hostilities, it remains vigilant, especially after a Lebanese soldier was killed by Israeli shelling in December.
A security source informed Reuters that this new Qatari aid continues an earlier $60 million package announced in 2022, which was distributed in instalments to support soldiers' salaries. The latest aid will ensure each soldier receives $100 monthly.
The aid is particularly significant given Lebanon's severe economic crisis, which has devalued the Lebanese pound and reduced soldiers' wages to less than $100 per month. This support from Qatar helps soldiers manage essential expenses such as basic generator services and frequent electricity cuts.
