Qatar to host FIBA West Asia Basketball Super League Final 8 this month
Qatar will host the 2024 FIBA West Asia Basketball Super League Final 8 later this month, announced the game’s continental administrative body FIBA Asia on Saturday.
The final event of the second season of FIBA West Asia Super League is scheduled to run from May 25 to June 1.
Six teams from the FIBA WASL Sub-Zone Leagues make up the Final 8. Champions Kuwait Club (Kuwait) will spearhead the Gulf delegation, which also has Manama (Bahrain) and Kazma (Kuwait) in it.
The West Asian teams are Al Riyadi, Sagesse Sports Club (both Lebanon), and Shahrdary Gorgan (Iran). The six teams will be joined by Central Asia’s BC Astana (Kazakhstan) and South Asia’s Tamil Nadu (India).
The two finalist clubs will earn a spot in the inaugural Basketball Champions League Asia (BCL Asia), which will be played from June 9 to 15 in Dubai.
The much-anticipated West Asia Super League Final 8 is coming to the Middle East for the second time, with the inaugural edition being played in Dubai, UAE, last year.
“Witnessing Qatar host the WASL Final 8 fills me with immense pride and excitement. This event highlights not only the exceptional growth and development of basketball in the region, but also underscores Doha’s commitment to excellence as a host city,” said FIBA Regional Office Asia’s Executive Director Hagop Khajirian.
With the country set to host the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) President Mohammed Saad Al Mughaiseeb felt the Final 8 event would give them an early feel for the things to come.
“Hosting the FIBA West Asia Super League - Final 8 in Doha this year marks a significant milestone for Qatar’s basketball journey. It isn’t just about showcasing our regional prowess, but also about laying the groundwork for the grand stage ahead,” said Al Mughaiseeb.
“This event serves as a testament to our commitment and readiness as we strive towards hosting the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027,” he added.
In recent years, Qatar had also hosted consecutive FIBA U16 Asia Cups — in 2022 and 2023. They also hosted the FIBA Asia Cup, the region’s flagship competition, in 2005.
“With the Final 8 set to tip off in Doha, we proudly continue to build a tradition of being a hotbed for basketball in the region from hosting recent U16 Asia Cups to the Asia Cup in the early 2000s. This year’s Final 8 heralds another chapter in Doha’s storied journey, as we continue to set the stage for unforgettable moments in basketball history,” said QBF Secretary General Saadoun Al Kuwari.
