Qatar to host Formula 1 Sprint race weekend in 2025
Formula One will once again have six sprint race weekends next season, with Belgium instead of Austria being the only change from the 2024 calendar.
Austria has held a sprint at Spielberg’s Red Bull Ring for the past three years, but will now revert to the traditional Grand Prix format.
Doha will host the 2025 season’s last Sprint weekend from November 28 to 30. This year, Doha’s Lusail International Circuit is slated to host the Sprint race from November 29 to December 1.
The sprint weekend will kick into high gear with the Shanghai race (March 21 to 23), before Miami, USA, hosts it from May 2 to 4. The Belgian Grand Prix, which was most recently held as a sprint in 2023, will be from July 25 to 27.
USA’s Austin will then host the weekend from October 17 to 19 before Brazil’s Sao Paulo conducts it from November 7 to 9.
The Brazilian Grand Prix at Sao Paulo’s Interlagos has been a sprint since the format — a Saturday 100km race offering points for the top eight ahead of Sunday’s regular race — was first introduced in 2021.
The schedule was changed this year so that qualifying for the sprint is on Friday, with the race on Saturday morning before qualifying for the grand prix. Three of the season’s last six races will be sprints.
Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali hailed the format as a great success.
“We’re seeing the proof of this in our audience data, fan attendance on Fridays, and from the promoters and partners,” he said in a statement.
The 2025 season will start in Australia from March 14 to 16.
