Qatar imposes travel ban on traffic law violators starting September 1
Effective September 01, 2024, individuals with unresolved traffic fines will be prohibited from leaving Qatar until all dues are cleared according to the Ministry of Interior (MOI).
This new regulation applies to all forms of travel - by land, air, or sea and it is part of Qatar's ongoing efforts to improve road safety and enforce traffic laws.
To encourage timely payment, the MOI has been promoting a 50% discount on traffic fines, available to all citizens, residents, visitors, and Gulf Corporation Council (GCC) nations. This offer, which began on June 01, 2024, ends on August 31, 2024, and applies to violations recorded within the past three years.
The ministry has also ramped up its public awareness campaign, urging drivers to follow key safety practices such as wearing seatbelts and refraining from using mobile phones while driving. The MOI highlighted that over half of data traffic accidents and major injuries are linked to mobile phone use behind the wheel.
"Fastening your seatbelt not only protects you and your passengers but also demonstrates a commitment to road safety," the ministry emphasized in a recent social media post. It also reminded drivers that radar systems are in place to monitor compliance with traffic laws, including seat belt use, speed limits and mobile phone usage.
Violators caught using mobile phones while driving face a fine of QR500 with no discount options, while seatbelt violations also incur a QR500 fine, eligible for a discount if paid within 30 days.
In a series of educational posts, the MOI continues to stress the importance of staying within designated lanes, following safe riding guidelines for electric scooters, and using pedestrian crossings correctly.
Thanks to these efforts road fatalities in have decreased by over 32% in the past two years! This improvements reflects the MOI's commitment to enhancing road safety through strict law enforcements, public education and the development of modern infrastructure.
