Qatar Museums wishes Turkiye on 100th year of its establishment
Turkiye’s government marked the 100th anniversary of the creation of a modern, secular republic from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire.
While there were some fireworks, a drone show and a procession of 100 naval ships in Istanbul, there was very little else in terms of grand celebrations. The government went in for low-key celebrations as it was just months after a devastating earthquake which killed 50,000 people and also because of recent tensions between Israel and Palestine.
Qatar Museums Chairperson Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who also heads the Doha Film Institute, Reach Out to Asia and Qatar Leadership Centre, wished Turkiye on the momentous occasion.
“Congratulations to the Republic of Turkiye on its National Day, marking 100 years since its establishment. This year, we celebrate 50 years of strong relations between Qatar and Turkiye, which significantly grew during the #QatarTurkey2015 Year of Culture, and I’m looking forward to more collaborations between our countries,” she wrote on her Instagram channel.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday observed the traditional protocol of laying a wreath at the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk — founding father of the secular republic — and greeted well-wishers before travelling to Istanbul to watch the navy ships’ procession.
The Turkish leader then gave a speech at 7:23pm, in honour of the year the republic was proclaimed. Later, he declared Monday a school holiday in honour of the centennial.
Qatar has enjoyed cordial relations with Turkiye and will celebrate 50 years of diplomatic relations this year.
Though the two nations have faced regional challenges, their ties have grown steadily over the last 50 years. The Doha-Ankara relationship grew significantly in the last five years when Turkiye came to Qatar’s aid during the blockade by neighbouring GCC nations.
Both nations have since then further strengthened their diplomatic, economic, social, and security ties and positioned themselves as key players in the region.
