Qatar National Library fourth most beautiful library in the world
Qatar National Library (QNL), one of the country’s best architectural marvels, added another feather to its cap when it was placed fourth in AD Middle East’s list of ‘The 17 Most Beautiful Libraries in the World.’
Architectural Digest (AD) Middle East, a website that covers the best of design, architecture, and interiors from around the world, hailed QNL as one of the most ‘mesmerising and exquisite’ libraries anywhere on the planet.
“The visual (and emotional) impact is mesmerising: it suddenly feels as though you are surrounded by all the books the 138M-long library has to offer,” AD Middle East wrote in its report.
The AD Middle East report also includes the Library of Strahov Monastery in Prague, Czech Republic, Old Library of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, and Royal Portuguese Cabinet of Reading in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the first three places.
The QNL, designed by renowned Dutch architect Rem Koolhas, resembles two pieces of paper pulled apart and folded diagonally at the corners to create a shell-like structure, enclosing the open-plan interior. It gives the building a striking appearance.
The architecture incorporates cutting-edge technology and sustainability features. The library roof is designed to minimise solar heat gain while allowing natural light to filter through, creating a comfortable and energy-efficient interior environment.
The QNL building also serves as a cultural landmark and symbol of Qatar’s commitment to education, knowledge, and innovation.
