Qatar national team coach Carlos Queiroz sacked after 11 games in charge, says reports
Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, who took charge of the Qatar national team after the 2022 FIFA World Cup, has reportedly been sacked after just 11 games, said reports on Wednesday.
The former Real Madrid and Portugal coach, who has worked around the world and led Iran to two World Cups, had taken charge of Qatar in February after signing a four-year deal.
Reports suggest that the Qatar Football Association contacted him last week to say his contract would be terminated. The 70-year-old flew into Doha on Monday when the decision was conveyed to him personally. An official announcement is expected soon.
Queiroz was in charge of Qatar for 11 games. He helped them win four matches and draw three while losing four. It means Qatar, the reigning Asian champions, will have to find a new coach for the delayed 2023 AFC Asian Cup, which will be held in Doha from January 12 to February 10, 2024.
The Portuguese national was tasked with rebuilding the aging team and also help them qiualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He took the team to the CONCACAF Gold Cup, where they recorded a first win against Mexico, a top-10 ranked team.
