Qatar ranked overall ninth in the world in the Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index
Qatari authorities have been doing a lot to ensure the country’s future is green and sustainable. One major area of Qatar’s interest has been in pushing out more green vehicles and the efforts are bearing fruit.
Qatar has been ranked overall ninth in the world in the latest report on global electric vehicle (EV) mobility — Global Electric Mobility Readiness Index (GEMRIX) 2023 by Arthur D Little.
The third edition of the study — GEMRIX 2023 — expanded its scope to 35 markets across all continents, thereby making it the most comprehensive EV market readiness indicator available in the industry.
The accomplishment was a result of Qatar’s commitment to enhancing sustainable mobility in step with the goals of Qatar’s National Environment and Climate Change Strategy and Qatar National Vision 2030.
The nation’s Ministry of Transport (MoT) has been providing innovative, eco-friendly mobility solutions that back all aspects of Qatar’s development. The MoT has developed a comprehensive, integrated strategy which will help transition the public bus system into 100% electric vehicles by 2030.
At the moment, nearly 70% of the country’s public transport vehicles are e-buses, which is backed by an integrated infrastructure for electric charging. Hence, Qatar is among the world’s leading countries in terms of having a zero-carbon transportation sector. It in turn results in lower energy consumption, harmful emissions, lighter carbon footprint and a better quality of life.
In an effort to further enhance the country’s position, the MoT is studying the standards and specifications of Electric Vehicles, in conjunction with the bodies concerned. It is also seeking to establish a specialised centre for inspecting and verifying EV specifications and conformity and issuing required approval certificates.
The MoT has also launched the Autonomous Vehicles Strategy to regulate the terms and conditions of using such vehicles in Qatar, aiming to provide smart, and environmentally conscious transit systems.
