Qatar secures key role on UNESCO Executive Board 2023-2027

Qatar has achieved a significant milestone by winning membership in the Executive Board of UNESCO for the 2023-2027 term, securing the highest percentage of votes within the Arab group during the recent elections held on the sidelines of the Organization's 42nd session of the General Conference in Paris, from November 7-22.

Having garnered 167 votes in the Electoral Group B, as officially announced by UNESCO, Qatar's role as a member of the Executive Board signifies its commitment to supporting international and regional initiatives, fortifying the Organization's endeavours, and addressing global challenges.

HE Sheikh Ali bin Jassim Al-Thani, the Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Paris, highlighted Qatar's dedication to bolstering international understanding and meeting the needs of all member states, aligning with the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan.

The victory underscores Qatar's reputation and trust among the international community, emphasizing its contributions to education and culture, pivotal drivers of stability in the world, particularly within the Arab region.

Acting Secretary-General of the Qatar National Committee for Education, Culture, and Science, Ali Abdulrazzaq Al Marafi, emphasized Qatar's commitment to supporting UNESCO's programs across various domains.

Dr. Nasser bin Hamad Al Hanzab, Qatar's Permanent Representative to UNESCO, reiterated Qatar's unwavering commitment to UNESCO's goals, stressing the crucial role of education, culture, and sustainable development amid the current global landscape.

The State of Qatar's position in the Executive Board holds significant importance in UNESCO's decision-making processes, consolidating its role as a pivotal United Nations agency.

The election of member states to the Executive Board, occurring within the organization's General Conference framework, underscores the Board's critical role in UNESCO's operations and implementation of UN resolutions across various sectors.

With 56 members, the Executive Board operates through specialized committees and sub-bodies, directing UNESCO's actions in culture, education, social and human sciences, communication, and information sectors.
