Qatar seeks to build most sustainable, competitive food system: Minister
Qatar ambitions to build a high-performance food system in the most sustainable way, His Excellency Qatar’s Minister of Municipality and Environment and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaei said in a speech during the preparatory meeting of the United Nations Food Systems Summit 2021.
With this aim, the country is working to further strengthen economic diversification and enhance harmony between economic, social and environmental development, all of which is in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, he added.
HE Al Subaei drew attention to Qatar’s successful food system and attributed its strength to the efforts of various sectors and a wide range of stakeholders.
He mentioned that a national committee consisting of stakeholders from the government and the private sectors works to implement the national strategy for food security.
The committee brings together consumers, traders, food manufacturers and producers, researchers, students and policymakers, coordinating the development and implementation of the national food security initiatives.

HE the Minister also spoke about the country’s steps to improve food systems in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030. This is carried out through projects focused on boosting Qatar’s food system to confront food insecurity at the regional and global levels.
HE the Minister underlined that the country has achieved 100 percent of the supply of basic foodstuffs through various programs underpinned by its national food security strategy, despite challenges such as harsh climatic conditions and the scarcity of its natural resources.
Qatar has also made efforts to enhance the capacity of local production and boost self-sufficiency while ensuring the preservation of its natural resources for current and future generations. This has been done with a focus on increasing local production of fresh vegetables, dairy, poultry and fish products.
Food quality and food safety are among the top priorities for the country, the Minister reiterated. According to him, Qatar will soon set up a food safety authority that will use modern approaches based on risk assessment, inspection, control and protection of food standards.
